Qantas introduced the Green Tier not long along, rewarding travellers who make sustainable choices at home and in their travels. This sits alongside their Silver, Gold and Platinum status. It is one of the few airlines to offer a sustainable status.

To achieve this, you must complete activities in five of the six listed categories. And in doing so, you are rewarded either 10,000 Qantas Points, 50 Status Credits or for Qantas to offset an additional 3 tonnes of carbon on your behalf.

This is my hack to achieving green status in the cheapest possible way. This works best if you’re about to book a flight or have an upcoming Qantas flight. Mind you, if you want the 10k bonus, it’s not worth booking a flight alone for it.

1. Reduce your impact (free)

Download the Qantas wellbeing app and complete the quiz on the Qantas well-being app

2a. Give back (3,200 points)

Visit the Qantas store and use your points to donate to one of the following charities: Ozharvest, Unicef, Kimberley Land Council or Great Barrier Reef foundation.

2b. Sustainable lifestyle ($20.00AUD or 3,000 points)

While you’re at the Qantas store, offset your home and car. Tasmania is the cheapest of all the states and territories. It is irrelevant which state and territory you reside in. As long as you purchase one of these, you tick off the sustainable lifestyle category.

You can pay with points of cash; I chose cash as sites such as Ozbargain value points at 1c per point, which is better value. You also earn 150 points by paying cash.

2c. Choose sustainable ($1.00AUD or 130pts)

And before you check out at the Qantas store, make your delivery climate positive to tick off this category.

Again, I chose to pay cash which is better value. You also earn an additional 10 points by paying cash.

3. Offset flying (from $0.45AUD, varies with distance)

When booking your Qantas flight before you check out, make your flight carbon neutral. This price varies with distance, but for a relatively short flight like Sydney to Canberra, one way in economy comes down to $0.45AUD. Other domestic routes should be around a few dollars at most, while long-haul international routes like Sydney to London one way in economy is $22.17AUD, so it’s best to offset your shortest flight.

And that’s how you achieve five out of the six green tier categories. So choose your reward of 10,000 points, 50 Status Credits or for Qantas to offset 3 tonnes of carbon on your behalf.

Total spent:
3200pts plus $21.45AUD for 10,160pts
or 6330pts plus $0.45AUD for 10,000pts

Enjoy!

Note: I haven’t included the sixth category, sustainable travel, because I don’t see economical value in it; perhaps a fellow poster might find a cheap gem to share with us all.
